5 Fresh Ways to Invite Spring into Your Colorado Springs Custom Home

Spring has finally arrived to Colorado and soon the mountainsides will be alive with the glorious greens of emerging foliage and the rainbow colors of wildflowers. Even though the snow is most likely not yet over for the season, it’s that time of year when you’ll want to bring a bit of the outdoors in to your Colorado Springs custom home.

We here at Bella Vita Custom Homes know that our customers enjoy fine craftsmanship in everything from their kitchen cabinetry to the artwork they display on their walls, so we think you’ll enjoy these suggestions for bringing a touch of Colorado spring color into your home while supporting local and state craftsmen and artists or nurturing your own creativity.

Where to find the perfect Spring accent piece for your Colorado Springs home

Add a touch of spring color to your mantle or dinner table with handmade pottery from a local or area Colorado artist. Colorado potters are known for their handsome and unusual one-of-a-kind pieces and their beautiful dining and serve ware lines. Take a sunny afternoon and head on over to Englewood for the Colorado Potter's Guild Spring Show and Sale to view the work of over 30 Colorado artists. You’re bound to be inspired and may even find an artist whose work will complement your home. Who knows? You may even start a new collection.

Besides the Potter’s Guild show, Colorado boasts numerous boutiques and galleries that feature handmade pottery with unusual shapes, glazes and styles that are sure to brighten up your home for spring. If your tastes lean toward contemporary or sculptural ceramics, we recommend a visit to the Plinth Gallery in Steamboat Springs for some of the most colorful and interesting statement pieces around.

If you’re into a more traditional look, Colorado Springs boasts one of the oldest active potteries in the country, established in 1899, Van Briggle Pottery & Tile continues to create highly collectible pottery and tiles. Consider an afternoon of shopping in Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs to see the work of other Colorado potters.

Bring in some blooms!

Nothing says “spring” like fresh cut flowers and ornamental houseplants. Ask your favorite florist to create a spring arrangement of freshly cut flowers in bright spring hues that complement your décor. It’ll look great with your new Colorado-made dishes! If you have a favorite vase or planter, take it in to your florist and ask her to fill it with fresh flowers or a spring-flowering houseplant.

Another great idea is to visit area nurseries to find flowering houseplants that can later be moved outside to your patio once the weather warms up. Begonias, impatiens and geraniums are some examples of flowering plants that add a pop of color to your house in the early spring and then move outdoors in their containers or replant in flowerbeds in the summer. Be sure and ask your garden center or greenhouse if the flowering plants you choose are suitable for outdoors considering the altitude and climate of your home.

If you want more exotic flowers there are a number of ornamental plant varieties that flourish indoors year-round. Hibiscus, Peace Lilies, Amaryllis, Orchids and Calamondin Orange all produce beautiful blooms that bring the sunshine inside.

New Spring Bedding

It’s time to throw off the heavy blankets and flannel sheets and add some light, fresh bedding and textiles to your bedroom decor. If you like the idea of using eco-friendly, sustainable products, consider organic bamboo sheet sets when you shop for new spring bedding. Organic bamboo is a durable, soft-as-cashmere option that keeps you cool and warm in the winter. Plus, bamboo is hypo-allergenic and anti-bacterial. Pick up one of the newer, lightweight down-alternative comforters and then choose one new duvet cover for spring and another to get a jump on your fall decorating.

If you don’t trust your own interior design instincts, or you are pleased with the designer who originally worked with you on your custom home interior, give him or her a call and see if together you can come up with some fresh bedding and accessories to add a pop of color in the bedroom and around the house. Stay on trend for Spring 2015 with bright blues and greens and vintage, oversized patterns. You might also check out the Pantone 2015 color collection for ideas and inspiration.

Throw pillows

Nothing can change up a living room more quickly or easily than throwing some new throw pillows on a sofa. Throw pillows are also a great way to try out a new color or a bold print that you may not be confident that you’ll like enough to commit to for drapes, upholstery or wallpaper.

If you have an artistic bent, or have a creative friend, think about using your own artwork on a custom-designed pillow. Look online for companies like Zazzle and Cafe Press that can turn your own design into the pillow of your choice. You can get some great ideas, or fall in love with one of the artists whose work is for sale from Denver-based, DENY Designs. While you’re browsing their interesting and fun throw pillow collection, take a few minutes and check out some of the wall art and other items available that you might find will add just the right pop of gorgeous spring color.

Feed a starving artist

Colorado, with its abundant natural beauty, attracts artists and creative types who use the mountains for inspiration to create one-of-a-kind and commissioned artwork pieces. Spend some of the warm, sunny days of spring checking out local and area galleries, run off for a weekend shopping trip in one of Colorado’s bustling historic mountain town, or hit one of the many arts and crafts festivals held throughout the state. If you find an artist’s work that you’re attracted to but you’re still not finding that special piece you’re looking for, ask to meet the artist or take the artist’s business card and give him or her a call later. You may find that the artist you admire has other pieces that meet your needs, or you can always ask specifically for what you want.
